How accurate is this understanding; what events along the way shaped the course toward statehood, or presented opportunities lost for reconciliation between Virginias sections?

For your essay, you need to evaluate what led to Western Virginias secession from Virginia. Address whether you feel it was inevitable (as historian Charles Ambler argued). Consider the following points in your essay:

Since the mid-18th Century, discuss in what ways were western and eastern Virginia different and what ways they were similar. Consider the legacy of the frontier period. (Also the distinct five geographic regions of Virginia.)
What specific long term grievance(s) were most important in driving the wedge between west and east? Explain your reasoning with evidence.
Consider the Virginia Secession Convention and the start of the Civil War in 1861. What were the major grievances of the westerners, and how did they see Virginias actions going against the will of the citizens?
Finally, considering the sequence of events from 1861-1863, how legal were the actions of the statehood leaders? Explain with evidence why you think they were constitutional or not.
