High school level essay
Whats the assignment? For your second project, I would like you to read the following texts:
The Power of No
http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/201310/the-power-no
The Perils of Playing House
https://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/200506/the-perils-playing-house
When Virtue Becomes Vice
https://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/201308/when-virtue-becomes-vice
What Happy People Do Differently
http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/201306/what-happy-people-do-differently
Once youre done, you should choose ONE that interests you. You will write an essay analyzing the ARGUMENTATIVE CLAIMS being made in the text. Ask yourself, What assertion or argument is the author/speaker making here? What perspective is being prioritized? What are the social or cultural clues? What are the assumptions being made? The biases? The ideas behind the claim? What specific appeals TO CREDIBILITY (ethos), EMOTION/VALUES (pathos), AND LOGIC/REASONING (logos) can you find?
You wrote about your own positionality in your first project. Now, for this second project, think about the positionality (place of assertion-making) of the speaker author in the text you are analyzing.
How long should my paper be? Your paper should be a minimum of 3 typed, double-spaced pages. Use a reasonable font and leave margins for comments.
Do I need to do any research? Yes. You need to use at least 2 sources and cite them correctly in MLA documentation style. You may use statistics, websites, online articles, brochures, books, government documents, videos, even music lyrics, as long as you are using them strategically and citing them accurately! However, do not use a dictionary as a counted source.
