Instruction
Prepare a report to assess your personal health status and possible associated health risks.
1. Calculate your individual energy requirements using the appropriate equation for your age and gender. Please refer to page 240 of your textbook (How to Estimate Energy Requirements) for further details and the calculation equations. Be sure to provide the appropriate equation and list each of your variables (height, weight, age, and physical activity level). Show every step of your calculations!
2. Calculate your BMI (body mass index) using one of the formulas provided on page 244 of the textbook. Be sure to provide the equation you used, your variables, and show every step of your calculations! What does your BMI indicate? According to the top of Table 8-4 (p. 243), what is your assessment of your BMI?
3. Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio. Use a tape measure to measure your waist at the level of your belly-button, and measure your hips at the widest portion of your buttocks. List your measurements. Use the following calculation: Waist-to-hip ratio = waist in inches divided by hips in inches. Show every step of your calculations! According to your waist to hip ratio are you:
4. Provide a brief summary of your familys medical history. Include both close family members (parents, brothers/sisters) as well as extended family members (grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins, etc.) Do any of your family members have diabetes? High blood pressure? Heart disease? High cholesterol levels? Cancer? Given your familys medical history and the results of your calculations of your body weight and body fat distribution in the steps above, explain whether you are at risk for developing heart disease, cancer, and/or diabetes either now or in the future.
5. Consider the knowledge you have gained from this activity and from the readings from this chapter on weight control. What is your assessment of your own body weight? Do you believe you should lose/maintain/gain weight? And if so, how much weight should you lose/gain? Provide justification for your response.
