Write a short (approx. 1 page) paper where you refer to some of the literary texts weve read and discussed in this class to discuss Wees thesis. Wee argues that Scream updates the teen slasher movie to appeal to a teenage female through reinventing some of its major conventions: the monster-villain, the final girl, etc. Do you agree or disagree with this argument? How do the monsters in Scream compare with the monsters in the Castle of Otranto, Northanger Abbey, and (possibly) other movies/stories youve read in the horror genre? What about the final girls (aka heroines)? Why do you think writers and directors change (or reinvent) genre conventions over time?
