Instruction
For this exercise, we're going to pretend that you've just graduated and are seriously looking for a job.
PART I. Go online and find a job listing suitable to your skills and experience that you would like to have. Copy and paste that job description, along with the URL address into a document.
PART II. Now that you know the job for which you are applying, you need to research the company and learn all that you can about what is does, how it operates, its goodwill actions, etc. You will also research the position you are seeking and determine, if possible, who you would be interviewing you. (Often the official site of a company will have a personnel directory that includes a bio and picture of all the employees.) Be sure to include a bibliography with active links of the sites you visited. You can put this at the end of the copy-and-pasted job description.
PART III. You need to tailor your resume to this job and company. Ask yourself which experiences, skills, etc are best suited to this job and why. Remember to follow all the margin rules, font rules, etc for a good resume. See chapter 8 and the appendix in the back of the book if you are in doubt. You may choose the organization style you feel works best for this scenario, but keep the resume down to 2 pages (preferably one).
PART IV. Write a cover letter that is tailored to this position, this company, and the interviewer (you always need to address your letter to the individual who is receiving the resumes). Your cover letter may not exceed one page in length and should follow proper business rules of style.
PART V. Pretend that you have already had an interview and are writing a thank you note to the interviewer. What do you think the person might have spoken to you about? Imagine something personal they might have shared about themselves in the interview. You will want to mention this in your thank you note. Write a thank you note in your own handwriting in a proper thank you card and turn that in.
METHOD OF DELIVERY
Upload an electronic copy of your job description, bibliography with active links, resume, cover letter, and a typed version of your thank you note. In addition, print these documents (except for the thank you note) and the handwritten thank you note to class on the assigned due date. Please assemble and staple the pages in this order:
#1: 1-page cover letter
#2: resume
#3: Job description with bibliography of visited sites. (Make sure your name is on this page.)
#4: Handwritten thank you note
