Portfolio Assignment 5.1: Book Report (reminder)
I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to not only remind you of the research book report assignment that you started in lesson 4, which will be turned in as part of portfolio 3, but to also review the requirements as you finalize your report. Lets go over this again and apply them to the final draft of your book report.
By now, you should have selected a novel written by an American author. The report itself should be organized into four separate parts, and each part will be labeled. The four parts are as follows:
Part 1: a summary of the novel, including the main characters, setting, plot, and major conflicts (1 page)
Part 2: a brief biography of the author (1 page)
Part 3: How does this author and his or her novel impact the culture of America? (1 page)
Part 4: Can this novel be considered a timeless American classic? Why or why not? (1 page)
Lets look at each of the four parts individually.
Part 1: A summary of the novel, including the main characters, setting, plot, and major conflicts (one page, single-spaced)
Your novel summary must include an explanation of who the main characters are in the novel, what the setting is (remember that the setting includes time and place), what the major conflicts are in the book, and a description of the plot. Of course, you dont need to explain every specific detail of the book, but you do need to explain the main events. This part needs to be at least one page long.
Part 2: a brief biography of the author (one page, double -spaced)
As stated, your biography needs to be brief. While you dont need to go into as much detail as you would need to go into if you were writing a research essay on the author, you do need to cover the following basic information:
Life events: birth, death, marriage(s), basic schooling, and so forth
Interesting facts
Writing career
Any information that provides insights about the author as a person
This part should be at least one page long.
Part 3: How does this author and his or her novel impact the culture of America? (one page, single-spaced)
This part will require you to do a couple of things. First, decide for yourself what the culture of America is in the first place. Then decide how the author has impacted it, if at all. You might want to consider thinking about if the author impacted American culture during a specific time period. For example, if a novel about divorce came out in the nineteenth century (when it was less common and therefore more taboo to write about), it might have had a different cultural impact than it would have had if it had come out in the twenty-first century. This section should be at least one page long.
Part 4: Can this novel be considered a timeless American classic? Why or why not? (one page, single-spaced)
First, define what a timeless American classic is. Then, based on your definition, determine if your novel fits your criteria.
Please follow these formatting rules for submission:
Include all four pages in the same .PDF document, with each page labeled clearly.
Include a title page that states the title of the book, the authors name, and your name.
Label each page with its appropriate title (for example, Part 1: A summary of the novel, including the main characters, setting, plot and major conflicts and so forth).

This will be a one page essay which analyzes the differences and similarities between the novel and the movie. The first task of this essay is to locate a copy of the movie. Check a local m
ovie rental store, or at your local public library, which will likely have it. If you subscribe to Netflix or Blockbuster, they have it on their mailing options.

As you watch the movie:

Have a notepad and a pen/pencil.
Whenever something happens that is different from the book make a note of it.
Enjoy one of the single greatest movies Hollywood has ever produced.
After you watch the movie:

Review your notes of differences
Pick a few of the differences and think about why they changed what they did

Write a one-page compare and contrast essay about the novel and movie, find a unifying element that will keep your paper from becoming a rambling commentary.
