In this exercise you will be given the amino acid sequence that makes up the protein hormone, oxytocin. From this sequence you will trace it back to the DNA sequence on that coded for this protein. Here is the amino acid sequence for oxytocin: Cys- Tyr- Ile-Gln- Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly 1) Using the chart on page 201 in your book you are going to find the three letter code for each amino acid in the sequence. Notice that there are some variables here because one amino acid can be matched to more than one codon. Write out your sequence. 2) To finish it you need to add a START CODE and a STOP CODE. Pick a start code and add to the front and a stop code and add to the end of the sequence. 3) Now determine the sequence for the coding strand of DNA. Adenine (A) pairs with Uracil (U)/Thymine (T) Cytosine (C) pairs with Guanine (G) Remember that the Uracil (U) is replaced by thymine (T) in DNA. 4) What would happen to the amino acid sequence if the first two letters (nucleic acids) of the DNA sequence were chopped off? 5) What would happen to the amino acid sequence if the fourth letter of the DNA code was changed to guanine? 6) What would happen to the amino acid sequence if an extra adenine was inserted after the fourth letter (nucleic acid)?
