Writing Assignment #2:
Outlining the Research
(SUBJECT: JUVENILE CRIME PREVENTION)
(Note: Juvenile crime prevention is a broad subject that includes such prevention methods as peer mentoring, substance abuse counseling, social skills training, youth courts, etc. Be sure to focus on one or two methods of juvenile crime prevention as a means of reducing the juvenile incarceration rate and racial disparities.)
1. For this assignment you will first need to locate several research-based documents related to your
topic. Next you should read and then summarize in a page or two the key findings in an organized
way (bullet points or outline form is fine for this assignment). You dont need to complete all the
research for the policy brief, but you should be nearly finished locating, reading, and summarizing
several recent research documents related to your topic.
o What I am looking for in this assignment is that you are researching the evidence in favor
of and against a specific criminal justice policy or practice in a thoughtful wayas this is a
writing best practice. It should be the scaffolding of the main body of your report/brief (i.e., the
section: Pre-Existing Policies, Policy Options, and Research). And in addition to noting the
research that shows a strategy or practice works, you should include a preliminary
breakdown of what strategies or practices have little empirical support or poor outcomes.
o The purpose of this assignment is to help you with constructing a research-based policy
brief incrementally, a skill that will serve you now and in your future careers. The least
successful way to write a research paper is to start at or very near the deadline. The best
way to write it is to start your project early, and construct it over time, because it gives you
the time to think clearly about the topic, the gaps in your research review, and the time to
make revisions.
2. Also, document your research-based documents in a formal way; namely, begin constructing your
Reference page. For each research-based document you locate and summarize (which can only
include a website or two), document your source in a reference list according to the Harvard
Referencing Style (or the APA style).
o The purpose of this is to aid you in keeping track of your sources that you will cite in the
text, and how it should be correctly formatted. It will also show me that you are using a
variety of sources, but primarily relying on journal articles, books, and book chapters. I may
even recommend an article or two.
*Please note that the scaffolding assignments are meant to help you with the main parts of a policy
brief, and you still need to write on your own the Executive Summary, Introduction, Conclusion, and
the Policy Recommendation(s) sections.
