Please do not wait until the last minute to watch the videos in case there is a problem. Thank you. Week 1 Assignment is Due 7/19 by 11:59pm A. Study Questions. Responses should be a few sentences to a small paragraph in length (3-5 sentences, be perspicuous). Use quotations from the book or paraphrase the book and cite the page number for your response. If the question asks for your personal opinion support your response with examples from the book. I have reformulated the questions where necessary, so please answer the questions as I have posed them. Chapter 3 1. Describe briefly the character of Socrates, as we know it from the testimony of his friends. (page 64) 2. How does Socrates proceed in his "examination" of his fellow citizens? (page 64) 3. A number of things seem to have "stood fast" for Socrates in the course of his examinations, things that in some sense we can say he "knows." What are they? Chapter 4 1. What is wrong with Euthyphro's first proposal? (page 70) 2. In what way is Euthyphro's third proposal an improvement on the second? What is still wrong with it? (page 70) 3. Should we care what other people think of us [according to Socrates, but also according to you]? (page 93) Chapter 5 1. What are Plato's goals? What does he aim to do? (page 98) 2. What two relationships exist between a Form and some visible thing that "participates" in it? 3. Relate the Myth of the Cave to the Divided Line. (page 115) 4. How persuaded are you by Plato's arguments for the reality of intelligible Forms? If you are not convinced try to formulate your objections using an argument of your own. (page 129) B. Vocabulary. Vocabulary should come directly from the book and nowhere else. Your definition should be one or two sentences long, at most. Define the term using the book (some definitions simply require that you infer the meaning from the context in the book) and cite the page number from the place where you obtained the meaning of the definition (use book only!). Note bene: You MAY use the glossary if the term is found there, as some terms are not found there and some are. Please also note that you need not define all ten terms. You are allowed to pick a given number of terms per the instructions for the vocabulary for that week. After defining the term that you have chosen, use the term in an illustrative sentence using the context of the book. For example, "democracy" (page 64). Example: Democracy common people have a voice in government (page 40). "Athens wanted to maintain its new form of government, democracy, so they rebelled against the Persians in 499 B.C." (page40) Vocabulary for Week 1 (Define and use in a sentence any seven terms of your choice) 1. Athens 2. Piety 3. Form or Forms (from Chapter 4 or 5, you pick) 4. Oracle at Delphi 5. Crito 6. Divided Line 7. Form of the Good 8. Analogy of the Sun 9. Myth of the Cave 10. Ladder of Love C. Video Questions. There are two videos to watch, each approximately 30 minutes long. Please use the below to fill in the blanks. Each blank is one word or one phrase only. Identify and number your responses for each. You need not recopy the entire question. Questions for "What is Philosophy?" Video 1. Now the obvious thing to think of if you were explaining this to a modern audience is t.v. But there is something wrong if you think that t.v. shows you the way that things really are. And thats what the Allegory of the Cave (Plato) is really about. The chains are customary ways of thinking about the world and thinking about our situation. Its what weve accepted from our parents, from the culture around us, the television, from the movies, from the novels that we read, all of these ________________________ that we have about what the world is like. 2. This is Platos way of showing us that going from being in the ________________________ to being able to ________________________ is not an easy process, is not an immediate process. What for him is crucial about coming to have knowledge and not just any old beliefs about something is that youve thought about it for yourself. That you dont accept something on other peoples authority, or because it seems obvious, or because you can just see it, but because you have reflected about it and scrutinized it in the most rigorous and philosophical way. 3. How does a person get started in philosophy. Often its a small thing, something that clicks and opens a path to ___________________________ 4. What is philosophy? How is it related to other fields of thought? How is it different? In philosophy you ask ________________________. Why does the world have to be this way? How could the world be this way? What does it mean for the world to be this way? You ask a few of those question and you begin to get to the deep foundational questions: philosophy is what lies at the bottom of it all. 5. What is a philosopher like? Often we think of philosophers as introspectivepeople who probe deeper and deeper into their own thoughts. But perhaps the most famous example of how to do philosophy was a person who loved to mix with people: Platos teacher, Socrates. What Socrates did was go around ___________________________ people. Questions for "What is Real?" Video 1. To say that reality consists only of matter (materialism) seems to leave out other things. What about our______________________ inner lives? 2. A view called ______________________ maintains that not only consciousness exists along with matter, it argues that reality is made up entirely of ideas. 3. In the philosophy of idealism, instead of making the world the final touchstone, that is everything is answerable to the world, you make the world answerable to our states of ______________________. 4. Still, if the idealists position appears extreme, many people believe in a spiritual reality that is different from the physical worldit may exist apart such as a heavenor it may, such as in Platos vision, exist as world of pure ______________________ or Ideas. 5. For realists there has to be an independent world, for anti-realists however, reality always depends on how society conditions us. If society sends us strong messages, then these messages become reality for us. Its not a new idea that getting in touch with reality requires breaking through the time encrusted schemes accepted by society. In 4th century B.C. Athens, Plato describes this idea in the parable of the cave. Plato says that we are all like ______________________ in the cave. 6. In the parable of the cave one prisoner is freed from the chains, climbs out of the cave, and is forced to view reality in the light of the sun. Platos message seems to be that only by thinking for ______________________ and by thinking ______________________ can you find your way to true reality and not just accept values imposed by others. 7. But can we ever really know difference between what ______________________ and what is independent of us?
