Instruction
How did struggles over the meaning and limits of freedom shape the development of the United States from the colonial era through Reconstruction?
this is the main question i did part one and this is part two
What are you doing?
In Part 1, you developed a preliminary argument about freedom.
Part 2 is about building the evidence you will use to develop that argument into your essay.
You will create an evidence bank of 8 specific pieces of course evidence:
4 pieces from primary sources assigned in Top Hat
4 pieces from lectures and/or the textbook
Your 4 primary-source pieces must come from 4 different primary sources
You do not need to fully analyze these sources yet. Your goal is to identify evidence you could actually use when you write your rough draft in Part 3.
For Each Piece of Evidence
Provide:
1. Source
Identify the primary source, lecture, or textbook section.
2. Specific Evidence
Identify the particular quotation, statement, law, event, historical example, or idea you may use.
3. Connection
Briefly explain why this evidence might be useful for your argument.
Be specific.
"The Virginia law shows that slavery existed" is too general.
"Virginia's 1662 law established that a child's status would follow the condition of the mother, making enslaved status hereditary" gives you specific evidence that you can use later.
Working Argument
Begin your submission with your current working argument.
Your argument may change from Part 1. That's okay. Historians revise their arguments as they encounter new evidence.
Working Works Cited
Create a working MLA Works Cited page for the sources you have selected.
This is the beginning of the Works Cited page you will use for your final essay. You can add or change sources later.
Course Materials Only
You may use only:
Course textbook
Course lectures
Primary sources assigned in Top Hat
Do not use outside websites, books, articles, Wikipedia, Google searches, documentaries, or other outside materials.
Important: This Is NOT the Rough Draft
You are not writing your complete essay yet.
You are building the evidence you will use for Part 3: the complete rough draft, due November 8.
You will not necessarily use all eight pieces of evidence in the final essay. The purpose of this assignment is to give you a strong pool of evidence from which to choose.
