Section 1: Citation (Provide a full citation at top of the first page in APA 6th edition format)

2. Title of the article
3. Title of the journal, volume number, date, month and page numbers
Section 2: Introduction and description of the main problem or issue the author is addressing and your thesis (you agree, disagree, identify with, etc.)
1. State in this paragraph the name of the text, the author, and the focus of your paper.
2. Identify the authors purpose or motive for writing the piece. What is the authors central claim, argument, or point?
3. Your thesis statement (one sentence) explaining what you are going to analyze, criticize, or try to prove about the text
Section 3: Criticism/Analysis/Evaluation of the author(s) presentation and conclusions. The goal is to show that you understand what the author handled well and not so well in the presentation. You should take a stance! Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence and organize your ideas so that they directly support your thesis.
1. What is the perspective of the author or what assumptions does the author make?
2. What evidence does the author present?
3. Introduction of details, examples, quotations from author and your reaction/ commentary.
4. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the piece?
Was the authors argument/position convincing? Why or why not, specifically? Was it well researched? Were the sources used reputable? Why or why not?
Was anything overlooked or left out that would be important to understanding? What?
5. Did the author overemphasize inappropriately or in a way to skew understanding of the issue/topic?
6. Was the author unbalanced or one-sides in presentation of his/her position or viewpoint?
Section 4: Reactions and the greater implications of the text (for the class, author, audience, or yourself).
1. Connect the text to ideas discussed in class.
2. Consider answering questions such as:
a. Did the piece hold your interest? Why or why not?
b. What did you realize as a result of reading the piece?
c. What questions does the piece raise for you about the topic or related things?
d. Compare and contrast the piece to other readings in this class.
