Instruction
Instructions:
Orion Manufacturing is a small business that builds solar panels. Orion is located in a community that has just made the minimum wage requirement $17.00 per hour. Orion was paying its lowest paid workers - line workers - $9.00 per hour.
Orion currently employs 1250 line workers at 40 hours per week. The plant operates for 47 weeks per year but pays its employees for 52 (vacation/mandatory holidays, closed two weeks at Christmas and one week during Thanksgiving). The company produces 7500000 items per year and sells 90% of what it produces. The company has fixed costs of $11,500,000 per year regardless of the number of items it produces, and variable costs of 1.15 per item produced, not including the line worker costs. Each item sells for $9 each.
Your task is to determine if Orion should remain in its current location or move to the next town where the minimum wage is $12.50 per hour but Orion would incur a one-time moving charge of $1 million and the variable costs not including wages would be $1.50 per item produced. Analyze both options for Orion's CEO. She wants to know how her profit would be impacted by each option.
Please analyze the options and write a report to the CEO that explains the financial impact of each of the options and then make a recommendation that is in the best interest of the short term, e.g. this year, if profit is the CEO's main concern.
Your recommendation should include re-cap of the current condition (e.g., $9 per hour minimum wage and $1.15 variable costs), the two options, an explanation of the financial impact of the options, and finally, your recommendation. You should include a table IN THE REPORT that shows the calculations of income, fixed costs, variable costs, line worker salaries, and net income of the two options. Do NOT include the table in a separate spreadsheet!
