I will copy and paste exactly what needs to be done for this essay, just like what my professor has posted on the syllabus. i will paste everything that needs to be done, due to i want you and i to be positively sure that the papers turn out perfectly with no plagiarism or mistakes, due to the fact that my professor can catch these things.


* Your topic may be on ANYTHING related to Western Civilization within the time period covered by this class.
* You MUST receive my approval of the topic. My job is to ensure that your topic is neither too big or too small and that you will be able to find sufficient material to accomplish a paper of the required length.
* you may use any credible academic work from any source (book, journal, Internet, etc.) to research the topic except the course textbook or other similar college history textbooks.
-- You WILL lose points if non-academic sources (such as Wikipedia, Answers.com, Infoplease, etc) are used. Web sources generally do not provide the in-depth information and analysis you need for a paper of this nature, a 4-page web page cannot possibly replace a solid, 150-page book written by an expert on the topic. Besides, anybody can put anything on Wikipedia - and sometimes it's even true!
-- Reference works, such as encyclopedias, may be used and must be cited in your bibliography but do NOT count as an academic source since they generally do not express opinions on the topic.

* You are required to have at least 5 sources, of which at least 2 MUST be academic BOOKS on the subject. You WILL lose significant points if fewer or prohibited works are used.

Thesis Statement, Outline, and Working Bibliography Requirements
A thesis statement, outline and a working bibliography are essential parts of your research paper. These provide both you and me with a "blueprint" of your planned work. As with any construction, don't start "building" until the "inspector" has signed off on the work!

* a help page has been provided to assist you in creating an effective thesis statement and outline as well as a working bibliography. An example of a complete Thesis Statement, Outline, and Working Bibliography, along with a sample completed required Outline Checklist, is available through the class website.

* a blank form, along with a completed required checklist, has been provided through the "Research Paper" icon on the class home page. A completed Outline Checklist MUST be the first page of your submission. Work submitted without a completed checklist may be returned ungraded or have significant points deducted, at my disgression.

* submit the work using the "Outline" link in "Dropbox" by the Due Date and Time. Submissions after the Due Date, if accepted, may receive only a single point to indicate that an outline was received in order for your Research Paper to be accepted.

* your working thesis statement, outline, and working bibliography are due the first class after the Midterm. I will provide feedback for you to make revisions, usually within 48 hours. Feedback will be posted where you submitted your work under the "Research Outline" dropbox.

* Research papers submitted without an approved final thesis statement, outline, and bibliography will NOT be accepted!

Research Paper Requirements

* The Research Paper MUST be your work compiled from a variety of sources, not a rework of somebody else's article, work, or paper. This MUST be a NEW work, not a resubmission of a paper previously submitted to another class.

* if you use of large blocks (ie, more than 30 words) of quoted material, you MUST increase the word length of your paper by a corresponding number of YOUR words!

* This paper is due by the date posted in the Class Schedule. Early submission is encouraged.

* When writing, keep in mind I am looking for quality in your words, not filler! Attempts at 'padding' with extraneous verbiage to meet the word count will cost you points!

* an example of a complete Research Paper, based upon the sample Thesis Statement, Outline, and Working Bibliography, along with a sample completed required checklist, is available through the class website.

* a blank required Research Paper Checklist has been provided through the "Research Paper" icon on the class home page. A completed required Research Paper checklist MUST be the first page of your submission. Work submitted without a completed checklist will be penalized a MINIMUM of 10 points in addition to point deductions for checklist requirements that were not met.

* submit the work using the "Research Paper" Dropbox no later than the Due Date and time.

* Research papers submitted without an approved final thesis statement, outline, and bibliography will NOT be accepted!

Check Lists

The checklists are meant to help you by ensuring that the critical parts of the submission have been included in the work. Your certification tells both YOU and ME that this work has been completed. If you can't certify that each requirement has been met, go back and do it!

* DO NOT FALSIFY THE CERTIFICATION. I will spot it, and you WILL lose points for the false certification IN ADDITION to not meeting the requirement.

* DO NOT REMOVE LINE ITEMS FROM THE CHECKLIST. This is the same as a false certification; I will spot it and you WILL lose points for the removal IN ADDITION to not meeting the requirement.
Attempting to circumvent the checklist requirements is cheating and only fooling yourself.
