Every business is affected by macroenvironmental forces. They can increase or decrease the need for your product, or create entirely new product needs. Raw material costs might be driven up or down. New target markets might be created or old ones changed. Whats important for a company is to identify those macroenvironmental forces that directly affect their business, which means understanding the nature of those forces and how to identify and analyze them.
Technological
The development of new technology can dramatically affect needs and wants. For example, the Internet completely changed the way people communicate. If you walk into any electronics retailer or department store, you will literally see hundreds of new products that were directly tied to the growth of the Internet. That shift to the Internet resulted in new consumer needs and wants, opening the door for smart companies to take advantage of that opportunity. Today, the pace of technological change constantly provides opportunities for new products.
Economics
In a recession, people lose jobs, or worry about that happening to them. This makes consumers less willing to spend their disposable income. However, in an economic expansion, job security makes people more willing to spend their disposable income. If your customers use disposable income to buy your product, knowing where you are in the economic cycle helps you plan production. Look at income distribution to see if certain segments of the population are growing wealthier and acquiring new needs. For example, a major reason that China is seen as an attractive market is a rapidly growing Chinese middle class that desires an increasing range of consumer goods.
Social-cultural environment
People's perceptions of themselves, others, organizations, society, nature, and the universe all effect buying patterns. Individuals allocate their limited resources to the things that are most important to them, to the things that give them satisfaction.
Values, beliefs, and norms are as important as the objective need for a product in shaping a consumer's buying decisions. Most Americans, for example, believe that they need a car. Would this be the case, however, if they placed a higher priority on environmental issues than on economic welfare or individual freedom? Would Americans give up their cars if there were better public transportation options available?
Core cultural values tend to persist. Most Americans believe in the value of hard work, honesty, generosity, and family. This was true 50 years ago and it will still be true 50 years from now. However, over time, secondary cultural values change and distinct subcultures emerge. Companies that recognize cultural change can reap considerable rewards. Nike, for example, has capitalized on the increased importance of exercise in the lives of Americans. To what specific groups and subcultures does Nike address it advertising messages? Why?
