DISABILITY IN FILM: To examine our societys view of disability, students will be asked to watch a film about individuals with disabilities and to write a reaction paper relating the film to readings and class materials. Films may be found through Springfield College, the local library, or through online means (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc). If a student plans to watch a movie they have seen before, they should watch it again to ensure that they are connecting the class readings and lessons when watching the film.
Guidelines for paper:
The movie reaction paper should be between two and three pages long and must connect to class readings and lessons. The paper should begin with a short (less than 12 of a page) synopsis of the film. Students are expected to use specific examples from the film to support their responses. In a narrative form (do not just copy questions and write answers below) answer these questions using specific examples from the movie you watch.
1. What are the attitudes of people without disabilities toward the characters with disabilities in the movie? (Look for examples of attitudes, and tell me how you know it - for example - you might say someone is pitying and then tell me how you saw that in the movie)
2. What attitudes do the characters with disabilities have toward people without disabilities? What do you see in this movie that shows this - or do you see any evidence of this? Talk about it.
3. What attitudes do the characters have toward their own disabilities? Do these attitudes change over the course of the movie?
4. Do you think this movie promotes positive or negative attitudes toward disabilities? Why?
5. What, if any, stereotypes about disability are evident in the movie?
6. What is your overall reaction to the movie? Would you recommend it to someone looking to learn more about disability?
7. What if anything would you change about the portrayal of disability in this film?
Remember to use specific examples from the movie to support your answers!
