Write an essay in which you survey the major economic issues in the Middle East. What are the common features of Middle East economies? What factors help explain the relatively poor economic development of non-oil economies in the region? What is the Washington Consensus, and how has its application affected the Middle East (be sure to include ideas from Stiglitz/Blackboard reading)? Why is oil such a unique basis for an economy? What are the consequences (both blessing and curse) of an economy based primarily on petroleum? Be sure to use many specific details and examples in the essay.
