Dramatic Character Analysis New Historicism is a type of analysis that looks at the time period in which a work was created. Using the context of the time period, we better understand a text. Both Nora and Troy are unsatisfied with their lives. They are both disrespected, blocked, frustrated. They both struggle for the life they want. Using New Historicism, I want you to write an essay arguing, and supporting with research, that something in particular is to blame for either Nora or Troys dissatisfaction. Choose one play. Come up with a reason for Troys dissatisfaction in life, or come up with a reason for Noras dissatisfaction. Your thesis question is: Based on the plays time period, what is your characters problem? *Note: Fences was written pretty recently. However, August Wilson was trying to capture the time period of the 50s. Feel free to use the 50s as the historical context of Fences.
