""I have always had an interest in the Rastafarian culture. I always felt I had a good understanding of their practices and their beliefs and obviously their fascination for marijuana. Just like most other readings, my understanding was flawed. The Rastafari are a strong willed group who believe in love, equality for one another, and natural foods (ital). I found their belief in eating or using only ital foods to be an interesting concept. Not only is it, for the better part, an incredibly healthy lifestyle choice, it also becomes a unique part of their daily life. During the authors discussion with Nigel, he notes "Nor will he accept any fruit or vegetable whose natural appearance has been altered by any cutting, mashing, or peeling" (Lewis, 379). This struck me as a very unusual way to live especially as a person who will accept only offerings from other people. It feels like Nigel's expectation of the food he is being offered was very high. Another aspect of the Rastafari religion I was unaware of was their view on women. I assumed that a religion that is so heavily based on love and respect amongst their brethren would also show the same level of love and respect for their women. While in the upper room in Nigel's mansion, Lewis overhears the conversation when one of the brothers states "Women are for pickneys (babies)" (Lewis, 380). This sounds to me like the Rastafari, or at least this group of Rastafari, view women as useful for just one thing. This to me, proposes the idea that women are still heavily objectified by the Rastafari and are very much still viewed more as an object for use than anything else.""
