SOCIAL MEDIA PROJECT: Students will work in small groups and identify a blog, facebook page or other social media outlet that is clearly disability related and reflects the voice(s) of individuals with disabilities. The purpose of this assignment is for students to explore how disability is depicted on social media and how people with disabilities are using social media. Students will analyze the blog or page to answer the following questions using specific quotes and examples from the blog/page.
1. Who is the blogger or organization controlling the blog/page?
2. What is the purpose of the blog/page?
3. Who is the intended audience?
4. What seems to be the bloggers (or organizations) perspective toward
disability?
5. Is there useful information for a person with a disability on this blog or page?
6. What types of comments/posts do you see? Are they positive, negative,
informational, supportive?
7. What kind of impact does this blog/page have on the social construction of
disability?
8. What is your overall reaction to what you have read? How does the
blog/page content fit with the class material (i.e. models of disability, attitudes, barriers, steriotypes, etc.)?
Groups will then summarize and present their findings to the class.
