Instruction
This assignment represents a particular assessment of how well this course has addressed some of the goals of the Colonnade or General Education plans. Specifically, the assignment is designed to assess your ability to think about and articulate your ideas and your understanding of things such as how your race, class, and/or gender has affected your personal experiences in the social world AND how you have developed an appreciation for the complexity and variety (diversity) in the world's cultures.
To complete this assignment, you should write a 750 to 1,000 word (3 - 4 pages) paper in which you identify and describe some information or learning from a particular topic from the course where the discussion/reading course has deepened or expanded your understanding of that topic. You should connect your discussion to how your "better" understanding of the topic has made you either MORE aware of how race, class, and/or gender influence personal experiences and or how complex and diverse the world is, or both. Personal examples are welcomed and even encouraged. Your paper should take an "evidence and argument" approach, meaning that you should describe the topic your learned something about and then discuss what aspects about that topic broadened your perspective. The most effective papers will use concepts and terminology discussed in class.
If some of the information that you wish to include in your paper is taken from one of the readings (textbook or otherwise) in the course, you should cite that source. Direct quotes should be kept brief and should include paper-specific citations. You DO NOT need to cite lecture material. I will assume that sharing specific information learned in the class, if not linked to a reading, did come from our classroom discussions.
