Discussion 1
Discuss the adjective Part-time used in the title of the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie. How does Junior feel half Indian and half white, as he explains in this quote from the beginning of the chapter Dance, Dance, Dance: Traveling between Reardan and Wellpinit, between the little white town and the reservation, I always felt like a stranger. I was half Indian in one place and half white in the other. It was like being Indian was my job, but it was only a part-time job. And it didnt pay well at all. (Alexie 118). Discuss the above quote in relation to Gordys profound observation after Junior reveals why Rowdy calls him an apple at the end of the chapter Dont Trust Your Computer, (Well, life is a constant struggle between being an individual and being a member of the community. (Alexie 132)).
