This assignment outlines the process for a needs assessment. A needs assessment
involves all the activities used to collect information about your students? learning needs
and wants, and explores the expectations and requirements of other parties (etc.,
teachers, aides, tutors (you), administrators, financial supporters, and other people who
may be impacted by the program (such as students? family members or communities).
Conducting a needs assessment may include surveys, questionnaires, test scores, and
interviews. See the appendices at the end of Chapter 3 (Richards text) for examples. The
information collected for a needs assessment will help define a program?s goals. These
goals can then be stated as specific teaching objectives, which then function as the
foundation on which to develop lesson plans, materials, tests, assignments and activities.
A needs assessment helps clarify the purposes of your program, and should be
conducted at multiple times throughout the year to guide lesson planning and facilitate
communication of student needs and how best to meet them. The following should be
included in your needs assessment:
? What was known/not known about students at the beginning of this assignment.
Also, what students know (or do not know) about why they need to learn your
curriculum
? A clear description of the process by which the needs of students were assessed
and information was obtained.
? Demographics, resources (material or personnel), and characteristics of students
(what information you choose to include is up to you, but should be relevant to
the curriculum you are trying to address). For instance, a language curriculum
would include the home languages, bilingual personnel, and academic
backgrounds of students.
? Needs of students (expressed by students). Level of attention for the needs
expressed is being proportionately addressed in lesson plans currently, and the
needs of the students currently not being met.
? What students need (expressed by other interested parties). How program
administrators, teachers, etc. chose the content and curriculum currently in place.
? Ideas for how objectives and lessons can be modified to attend to the needs of
students. Ideas for how students can help convey to their teachers what their
needs are.
? Appendix includes the instrument created and used to obtain information.
? Evidence of proofreading of submitted paper and submitted on time.
