  • After reading about conflict theory, i can know see it in society. I believe our society is organized such that the rich exploit the poor because the rich are greedy and want more. This is present with the big corporations such as walmart who have outsourced to oversea companies to provide cheaper products. These companies pay their workers low wages and they work long hours. Because they have lower expenses from lower wages they produce cheaper products. Walmart demands these cheaper products which puts a burden on the workers who produce the products. Walmart then sells these products and has huge financial gains. These financial gains go towards the CEOs and the CFOs of the company instead of being distributed to the individuals that actually produce the products. In societies such as North Korea, they have a communistic society which the people work for the government. These people have lower living conditions while the government accepts all the income however, the people still have equal shares of income. Some variables responsible for exploitation are individuals greed for more money. The higher ranking employees want more money for themselves so they try to pay workers as cheap as they can. Another variable is employment opportunities. When an individual has no exit opportunity such as quitting a job because there is no other job opportunity out in the economy, the individual will put up with the harsher working conditions just to keep an income.

  • Here's the response: While I do agree that the rich "exploit the poor," generalizing that all rich people are greedy and want more are simply inaccurate. I don't think people are inherently evil, it's just that there will always be people at different levels of society, people will be doing things that are demeaning and may be viewed as exploitation. The alternative solution is that everyone is paid the same wage, and thus becomes a communistic society. I feel it is inaccurate to claim that the rich exploit the poor, its more that society and culture is built in a way whereby the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and thus the poor are exploited.

  • Conflict theory is a perspective in social science that claims that groups within society will end up exploiting each other, especially the more powerful to the less powerful. My reaction to this is while we see this in our day to day (think occupy Walstreet), I do not think that it is completely accurate that the rich would simply just exploit the poor. It theorizes that everyone in a richer group will use their power to exploit groups with less power, when in reality money simply gives the richer the opportunity to do things that the poorer people cannot. This is just the law of life, the person with more materials have more bargaining power, and the person with more bargaining power will be able to do more things. Societies have tried to fix this, namely europe or even China and Russia by having a communistic society - where everyone's worth is supposed to be the same....and that ideology collapsed. In Europe, they have a socialist society, whereby they pay higher taxes (the richer) in order to balance out the economic classes. I believe that the variables that allow for this exploitation are the laws that governments put into place. These laws protect the poor from exploit, and tax the rich in order to fund more things for the poor to get more wealth. The Republican party, however, believe in trickle down economics (which has proven time and time again that it does not work), that the rich should get richer so they can support the poor. This is why exploitation of the poor in the United States is highly prevalent. What is your general reaction to conflict theory? Do you think our society is organized so that the rich exploit the poor? Are there societies where this is less true? What variables do you think are most responsible for exploitation and why?
