Please read the following primary sources in the textbook: 1.3, 2.8.1, 2.6. The source numbers refer to designations in the textbook, not page numbers. It wouldn't hurt to browse some of the other sources as well (full list of what we'll discuss in class below), but you're responsible for writing only about those listed here. write some brief reactions to what you've read. Don't just summarize, and don't parrot the translator's introduction to each source (the parts in italics in the textbook); I'm looking for your own analysis. We're covering these societies next time...hence I don't expect you to have any background knowledge, and the names of kings/pharaohs/gods are irrelevant for our current purposes. Read for nuances of tone and perspective, the impression these texts give of early rulers. Rather than reporting what 'happens' in these texts, then, try to dig deeper; don't assume that such texts record the sort of objective facts we expect from a history textbook, for example -- think more about how such depictions of kingship were designed to impress people and to justify the king's authority. Don't assume that any king possessed unchallenged power that he could wield without consequences. In fact, several of the sources demonstrate how cautious kings (and pharaohs for the Egyptians) were to guard and 'advertise' their right to rule. In the same vein, pay attention to the very serious responsibilities attached to the awesome powers attributed to the king or pharaoh. And in reviewing themes of justice, authority, legitimacy, and war, record specific details in the assigned sources that lead to the analysis you offer.
