1_(R) ONce upon a time in the world, class meant everything. Being the highest classes meant being kings or queens in most countries, being poor referred to being slaves. But throughout history the view towards class has changed a lot. Nowadays, it makes less of an impact on social activities then it did in the past. These days gender is the strongest thing that impacts society. The way a man and woman can be completely different people even though they are both human. Woman till this date still aren't allowed to do certain jobs, or go out at certain times, or even show their skin in some countries. There are just certain rules that have been set in the past, that people still believe woman and men should follow. As Brett said, "Look at politics. Our history shows that men have dominated positions held in office in our country's young history. It hasn't been until this past decade where we see women consistently rising to national political office and power," is so true. With time, society will start realizing that gender doesn't have anything to do with the way one should be characterized. But that females can have the same dreams and hope that men do too! profile icon private message icon

i think that as hunter gatherers work was divided based on gender then when civilizations started we started seeing class and gender then as time progressed and there was a need for slaves we saw class, gender, and race, but in the modern day all these things are slowly melting away, but might be coming in different forms as Tobaige said earlier. i don't see the law discriminating between race, gender, or class. it is those who must uphold the law that discriminate. as for society's view of roles of genders i saw the change happen in a matter of three generations. my Grandmother was a stay at home mother, because that was her role in society, but when it was time for my mother to go to college she wanted to be a doctor, but my Grandfather told her to become a teacher, because that was what is socially acceptable then, but now my sister's choices of majors in college are limitless. when we think of the social divisions we rarely think of religion, sexual orientation, and country of origin. we don't think of these things, because they are the worst if we act upon them. just think of what Hitler, or the Serbs did. what they did was either on these things, look at the results.

AND THAT WAS THE QUSTION In this week's 2 lectures, there are a variety of ways of thinking about race, class and gender. Which do you see being most powerful in social life? In other words, which do you think most influence the way people are taught to see the world and the laws that guide our society? Give some examples of the various ways our understandings of race/class/gender are embedded in pop culture and politics. Are there others that you think might be important, but receive little popular attention? Why might that be?
