Instruction
For this assignment read chapter 5 from the Pojman volume, "Religion and Ethics," and respond to the following prompt.
In this chapter Pojman is investigating the relationship between ethics and religion. He examines two thesis in the first part of the chapter, and quickly rejects them. In the last part of the chapter, he investigates the third thesis: that religion can enhance morality, but is not necessary for it. He provides six reasons for thinking that religion can enhance morality. Choose one of the six reasons he provides and provide an analysis of it.
The analysis should be about two paragraphs (~4-5 sentences each). For a complete analysis you will need to include the following: a clear summary of the claims that Polman is makingboth the main conclusion and the reasons he provides for thinking that conclusion to be true. Then, you should take a position on either the conclusion, or the reasons he provides. To help with this think about the following questions when reading the second half of the chapter: Is the conclusion believable? Do you agree with it, or disagree? Why? Are the reasons provided good ones for accepting his conclusion? Is one of the reasons wrong, or false? When providing your opinion on either the conclusion he asserts, or the reasons he provides in support of that conclusion, be sure to discuss the reasons that led you to take up your opinion. The summary should be the first paragraph, and then the critical response the second paragraph.
