Critique Essay:
The Critique is an extension of the Explanatory. Where the Explanatory begins the conversation of what a thing is, the Critique goes into research, deeper research on the subject. You can use the Explanatory paper as the skeleton of the Critique, word-for-word even, but the Critique must extend the Explanatory into new territory. This is a 7-10 page paper that includes the Dillard books, 2 books sources, and at least 2 peer-reviewed sources. Note that whatever you do your Critique on, will also be what your Presentation is on.
The Presentation is a 5-6 minute Power-Point that informs the class about your Critique paper and the direction you took with it. Different from the syllabus, you will NOT do this in groups, but will do this solo. A 1-page summary and a copy of your Works Cited, should be given to me on the day of your Presentation.
1. Critique: In your third and final assignment you will write a Critique. Do not underestimate the amount of work that will go into this paper, it is a lot of work and will not be done quickly or at the last minute: this is a Research Paper. This paper will show that you can examine an argument that Annie Dillard is making in Teaching a Stone to Talk, as well as in at least one of her other works, plus TWO peer-reviewed academic journal sources, TWO books sources, and ONE academically acceptable internet source, and that you offer an argument about the argument that she is making. For example, if Dillard says that mystical religious experiences are essential for a depth of personhood, you should be able to argue how that is indeed the case, offer proof, offer insights, get sources to speak to each other, add to the conversation, and open doors for your readers further consideration.
