One theory of music is Formalism, which states that musical structures are understood through unique musical faculty and therefore can have no connection to non-musical experiences such as feeling thus having no subject matter and, consequently no meaning. Another is Expressionism which states that music evokes feelings and that the artist conveys their feelings through the music which the audience can then perceive and experience.
