For Monday's class, please read William Clifford's "The Ethics of Belief," pp. 103-107. Then prepare a written response to the following questions to be handed in at the beginning of class. [1] Clifford uses the analogy of a ship-owner to yield a conclusion about our responsibilities with respect to what we believe. What conclusion does he draw? And why does he think we have these responsibilities? [2] If one were to adopt Clifford's position, what consequence would follow for a typical religious person?

When I wake up, I will post an assignment and I will assign it to release the money for u. For our last two sessions we will be covering C. Stephen Evans' "Critical Dialog in Philosophy of Religion". For Wednesday's session read pp. 120-123 and then prepare a written response to the following questions. Your responses will be collected at the beginning of class. Q1: What is fideism according to C. Stephen Evans and what does it recommend as the proper way of approach religious belief? Q2: To what extent does William James' approach share similarities with fideism? Q3: What is one concern you have about fideism? It is from page 31 to 35 in this website. https://books.google.com/books?id=LaY2Q47sq3MC&pg=PA33&lpg=PA33&dq=Stephen+Evans'++Critical+Dialog+in+Philosophy+of+Religion&source=bl&ots=m3AAlS_MZn&sig=5yn-0U6XlMF2lX6j9loUI5H3tes&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjf2PTmha7MAhWEPB4KHXoTCiEQ6AEIUTAH#v=onepage&q=Stephen%20Evans'%20%20Critical%20Dialog%20in%20Philosophy%20of%20Religion&f=false
