Assignment 3: Final Project Proposal
You will complete the final project in stages. In Week 1, you will draft a proposal for your final project to be reviewed and approved by the instructor that accomplishes the following:
1. Identify the current event or contemporary social issue that you will be analyzing in the final project. Your issue must be broad enough to sustain deep philosophical analysis and must have sociopolitical relevance. This means that the issue should be one that concretely affects people’s lives and that requires a solution. Issues that only affect a few people or have only a minor impact are probably too narrow. For some topic suggestions, you might want to browse some recent episodes of PBS’s Frontline series.
2. Identify two news articles on your topic located using the South University Online Library. Make sure that the articles you choose present at least two different perspectives on the issue or event you choose and include information that you can use to develop your arguments and analysis. If you cannot locate two news articles on your topic, or if all of the articles share the same perspective, you should choose another topic. You should cite the two articles using correct APA citation.
3. Analyze the issue using the critical-thinking method. A template to guide and organize your analysis can be found here.
Submit your assignment in the W1: Assignment 3 Dropbox by Monday, August 27, 2012.
Each week, you will analyze the issue from the perspective of that week’s theme and submit your analysis to the Dropbox. You should quote or paraphrase from specific pages in the course text to support your claims about philosophical ideas and concepts using correct APA citation. In Week 6, you will revise the submissions from Weeks 2–5 in light of the facilitator’s comments and suggestions and organize the revised sections so that they form a cohesive analysis of the current event you selected in Week 1. The final project submission should reflect an understanding of the weekly themes listed and their relationship to your chosen topic. It should also include an introductory paragraph that explains the sociopolitical relevance of your chosen issue and states your view on the issue, as well as a conclusion. The following chart will help guide you through each week.
Week 1 Introduction to the final project: Identify your topic, locate two news articles, and submit your proposed topic.
Week 2 Analyze the philosophical significance of the contemporary social issue using Socratic philosophy.
Week 3 Analyze the philosophical significance of the contemporary social issue from the perspective of questions about identity and freedom.
Week 4 Analyze the philosophical significance of the contemporary social issue from the perspective of questions about reality.
Week 5 Analyze the philosophical significance of the contemporary social issue from the perspective of questions about ethics.
Week 6 Final project: Revise the submissions from Weeks 2–5 in light of the facilitator’s comments and suggestions, and organize the revised sections so that they form a cohesive analysis. The final project should be in the form of a 750–1,000-word essay, double-spaced in APA format
