At the outset of the class, we talked about the role laws in complex societies, as the "glue" the brings all pieces of the criminal justice system together. A current example of how laws reflect changing cultural views on a given issue is with the recent legalization of marijuana in Colorado. Some would suggest that this move reflects a broader view in this country on how we should both treat the issue of drugs and examine the most effective ways to reduce problems associated with use and abuse. Sounds like the sort of quandry perfect for a budding criminologist such as yourself! Please read all of the NY Times editorial piece, "Should Drug Enforcement Be Left to the States?". I would like you to answer the fundamental question: With more states taking different approaches to drugs, should the federal government continue its involvement in prosecuting local drug cases? Please summarize both sides of this argument provided by the guest debaters, and then provide me with your personal reaction to the question. Your paper must be a minimum of 500 words, excluding title and citations, and must be submitted as an MS Word doc through eCampus.
