For this assignment, please skim over the Pojman chapter on "Utilitarianism," and then read in more detail the article by Peter Singer, "One Atmosphere," in Climate Ethics (chapter 10). Then answer the following questions over Singer's article:
1. What facts that are presented at the beginning of Singer's discussion of policy reform are especially relevant to a utilitarian analysis of climate change?
2. Explain the two theories outlined in the discussion of equal distribution: the historical and the time-slice approaches. Are there any issues with these two approaches to equal distribution?
3. In one section, "The Greatest Happiness Principle," Singer discusses why a classical utilitarian might object to the idea of fairness that he presentswhy does the classical utilitarian, according to Singer, disagree with principles of fairness? How does a utilitarian in general come to the same conclusions about how to act as one who accepts a basic principle of fairness?
4. At the end of the discussion Singer proposes appealing to only one of the four ideas of fairness that he discussed: which idea of fairness is this? And why does he think it will work?
5. Do you agree with Singer's analysis? Or do you find something wrong with it? Explain.
