This week, you will build upon the analysis of the social issue you chose in Week 1 by explaining a relevant philosophical theory from this week’s reading and considering how this philosophical perspective might challenge and/or support your view on the issue. This template will help you organize your analysis and build upon the Final Project Proposal you completed in Week 1.

I. Step 1: First, identify the philosophical perspective that you will be using in your analysis. In Week 3, this should be the perspective of one of the philosophers we studied this week (Descartes, Locke, Hume, Kant, or one of the theories of human freedom, such as determinism, indeterminism, or existentialism).

II. Step 2: Second, explain the specific theory, citing relevant passages from the Chaffee text and the Online Lectures to support the assertions you make.

III. Step 3: Third, identify how the theory impacts your perspective on the issue. To do this, first review your belief/opinion on the social issue you chose and the reasons you identified in Week 1.

IV. Step 4: Fourth, do the same with the counter-arguments you identified in Week 1. To do this, first review the counter-arguments you identified in Week 1.

V. Step 5: Revise and arrive at a conclusion. It may be different from the belief or point of view you started with and should include your answers to the questions you raised in Step Three. As you searched for reasons that support your belief or point of view, you may have also come across reasons that challenge your beliefs. Don’t hide from these challenges. Remember, critical thinking requires us to examine and even question our beliefs. If you find yourself more persuaded by the other points of view than your own, don’t despair! Unlike a formal debate, the kinds of arguments we make while engaging in critical thinking are open to revision. If your conclusion doesn’t match your thesis, don’t forget to go back and revise your essay to reflect your updated argument before turning it in. This is also a good place to consider the consequences of some of the answers you may have come up with and pose additional open-ended questions about your issue. Critical thinking is an ongoing process, so it is important to identify questions for further thinking and to wonder about factors and circumstances that might change your view on a particular question.
