Exercise #1: The Ethnography ￘This exercise asks that you produce an ﾓethnography.ﾔEthnography is a genre of writing that uses fieldwork ﾖ goes out into the world ﾖ to provide a descriptive study of human societies. In this instance, your ethnography will help you see your idea in a real-world setting. Listen, observe, think; spend at least an hour there, writing down your observations and thoughts. You are encouraged to car-pool with classmates, and/or use public transportation to get to one of these places. You might even have some fun. ￘Ask yourself questions such as: What is the design of this space? Where is it located? What types of people are here? What do you see when you look around? How is everything set up? The colors? Etc.What does all of this say about this space? ￘Possible Destinations for Ethnographic Analysis: ﾷThe San Fernando Mission ﾷA pool, park, or playground (Northridge Park, Griffith Park, Elysian Park) ﾷThe Getty or Getty Villa ﾷMuseum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) ﾷLos Angeles Natural History Museum ﾷLos Angeles County Art Museum(LACMA) ﾷRodeo / Melrose / Montana Shopping districts. ﾷThe CSUN Orange Grove or Botanical Garden ﾷThe Metro, or a Metro subway Station / Union Station ﾷThe Beach: Venice, Santa Monica, Zuma, Malibu, etc. ﾷA Coffee Shop ﾷSome other spot youﾒve discovered. vYou may go with another person or a group. vEach student is required to write separate papers, with separate ideasreflecting on the idea of space. vTry to be open-minded as you look for connections to, and examples and manifestations of, the idea youﾒve been building, the texts weﾒve been reading, and the broad theme of this project.
