In a 3-4 page essay, analyze and discuss the ways in which the Indigenous/peasant populations of Central America have experienced exclusion since the arrival of the European and explain the origins and nature of that exclusion. Also make sure to connect your essay with the following question: how are subordinate groups (Mayans, poor peasants and/or women) of today challenging oppression?
You should structure your essay around three specific themes from the following list:
- Force labor
- Land use and expropritiation
- Repression
- Indian/peasant struggles -
- Indian slavery
- racial separation
- the discourse of concealment
Your essay should include the following elements:
1. Introduction: Develop an introduction that explains exclusion in general terms. In this introduction, support is NOT required. Just be able to use your OWN voice. Make sure to end with the statement that points directly to what you want to discuss, CREATE A CLEAR THESIS.
2. Body: The body of your essay should address the three themes (from the above list) that you have chosen to structure your essay around. Make sure you fully answer the prompt and the question above. Substantial evidence must be taken from the readings, you should brainstorm and find specific examples to illustrate those points.
3. Conclusion: Your essay should have a conclusion that reiterates and reflects upon the main point of your thesis.
4. Avoid long quotes. Paraphrase whenever possible. Make sure to provide quality work. Your effort will be noted. Deductions will result from unclear logic, a lack of application from the reading, underdeveloped answers, awkward comments, and a lack of effort. Remember, you want to demonstrate that you read, form an argument and support it. Include a works cited page. PLEASE USE PROPER CITATIONS (MLA style).
Essay is due September26 at the beginning of class. NO EXCUSES WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR LATE PAPERS. THIS ASSIGNMENT COUNTS FOR 15% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE.Â
