The Poverty Guidelines for a family of 4 is $24,250 per year. Devise a budget for such a family by dividing that income by 12. What type of housing would be affordable? What type of transportation? Clothing, furniture, and entertainment are expenses to consider as well. What type of groceries could be purchased? Research rents, transportation costs, and food costs for a family of 4 as you develop a budget. Try to add in some of the basic services you use like cell phone, internet and cable access. What conclusions can be drawn from this? What would you recommend for such a family?
For this assignment you can organize your information in a table or grid using the headings: Housing, Heat, Transportation, Food, Clothes, Phone, Cable, etc. (see what you can actually fit in the budget) for an average month. Use REAL numbers researched from some area of the US. Tell me where your family lives and how they live on this income. Once you have your data together write a one-page paper that is a reflection on your data. What did you learn? How is it connected to your life? Is this what you expected to find? (These are suggested questions, be creative, respond the way you see fit).
