Instruction
In this paper I want you to explore how our understanding of both individual behavior and social forces is crucial for understanding and addressing the problems of the family. To do this I want you to watch the documentary "Tough Love" which can be found by following the link that is posted in the next item on the Module list.
In this film you will see the struggle of two families to try to reunite after the children were removed from their homes by child protective services. What I want you to do is take note of the process used by the courts and others to determine what makes a fit parent. How does society (and the structures we have built into society) define what makes a good parent? How are parents scrutinzed by the system? How does other important social categories such as social class, race, and/or gender influence the definitions of the parents in the film? Select three specific examples from the film to discuss in depth as examples of how society defines "parenthood" in general and in the specific cases shown in the film. For your conclusion, summarize your thoughts about the court process and actions of child protective services. Do you think they are doing their job or should they be reformed?
