COMM 462 Application Assignment
Organizational Culture Comparison
Purpose: To allow students to compare and contrast organizational cultures using observation and interpretation of artifacts
Choose two different but similar, competing organizations (i.e., Home Depot and Lowes) in which you are not a member or employee. Product lines, services, price points, and target audiences should be similar, though one organization may be local and the other a corporate chain/franchise. You may be somewhat familiar with the organization (perhaps you have been a customer), but you should have little insider information about what it is like to be a member of those organizations. Also, be sure to choose organizations in which you can comfortably spend some time observing.
Plan to visit each organization for at least 30 minutes. You may tell an employee or manager that this is a class assignment, if necessary. During that time, you should observe cultural indicators or what Schein described as artifacts. Pay special attention to the following:
Physical surroundings, grounds, environment, spatial layout
Personal spaces (desk areas) and public spaces (entrances, lobbies, seating)
Dcor (walls, seating, lighting, furniture)
People (employees, customers, volunteers, etc.), clothing, gender, age, race
Interactions, greetings, gestures, conversations, tone
Products, services
Evidence of rites/rituals, heroes, mission, slogans, logos
You will want to take detailed notes and may want to sketch layouts or take photos, depending on the appropriateness for the environment. Write 2-3 pages (typed, double space, 12 point font) comparing and contrasting the two organizations. Be sure to cite Liberman (2013) and Schein (1990) as you address the following questions in your response:
1. Based only upon your observations, describe what was similar, if anything, about the two organizations.
2. Describe what was different about the two organizations.
3. What interpretations can you make about each organizations culture? Specifically, following Scheins three levels of culture, what did the artifacts suggest about each organizations values? About each organizations underlying assumptions? What appears to be important and/or not so important to each organization?
4. In your opinion, to what extent do the external messages communicated by the organizations artifacts really reflect what the organization is all about? In other words, based on what you know about the organizations, are the artifacts congruent with the organizations real culture, or are there discrepancies that dont exactly line up? (To answer this last question, you may utilize what you have personally seen/heard/experienced with the organization, or you may do a quick review of the organizations website, mission, etc.)
