ANALYSIS /CRITIQUE OF THE ARTICLE
1.The article gives strong arguments which are accompanied by illustrations from the school setting. The author shows how cultural differences between the whites and blacks affect learning and what can be done to end these disparities. He carefully shows what happen when there are cultural differences and how the learning process is affected. "The dilemma of involuntary minority students, then, is that they may have to choose between "acting White" (i.e., adopting "appropriate" attitudes and behaviors or school rules and standard practices that enhance academic success but that are perceived and interpreted by the minorities as typical of White Americans and therefore negatively sanctioned by them) and "acting Black," "acting Indian," "acting Chicano," and so on (i.e., adopting attitudes and behaviors that the minority students consider appropriate for their group but that are not necessarily conducive to school success)."pg. 10. Also, the author is well cited; it has a list of references which have been provided to show where the information was got from. The author has referenced all the borrowed work, and this shows he hasn't plagiarized the work. For instance, he shows. One difference between voluntary and involuntary minorities is that the former place a good deal of responsibility on the children for their school behavior and academic performance
2. The article has several weaknesses. First, the language is not as simple for all people; these are some sense of ambiguity in the article. Some of the vocabularies used are just as complicated to understand for people who are not professionals. We have found from ethnographic studies that whereas voluntary minority students try to learn to act according to school norms and expectations, involuntary minority students do not necessarily do so. This might present a challenge to an ordinary mind.
3. Conformists- the whites discussed in the article view themselves superior to the blacks, and that's why in some instances the black children are required to act white as if being black is a crime. The author notes that this becomes a challenge to the students when they have an obligation to behave in a different culture.
Also, the ideas presented in the conflict theory by Carl Max are shown in the article. Class division is shown, parents belonging to the middle class behave in a different way from parents who view themselves as rich. This affects the developing pupils, negatively.
4. My topic impacts on the education sector, we need to understand how our cultures are diverse and how we can live with it. Students are suffering because of the discriminative systems they find themselves in and the classes they have to fit in to be respected. All the cultures are classic, teachers and parents have to get that and respect it, and stop forcing black students to act white, or the Chinese students to work black.
5. I would use symbolic interactionist to analyze this article. The article has used many sociological theories to show the disparities in the educational department and the changes that should take place in the education sector to make cultural differences have less effect in the learning process. We have found from ethnographic studies, that whereas voluntary minority students try to learn to act according to school norms and expectations, involuntary minority students do not necessarily do so.
