Instruction
Write a 3-4 page essay in which you closely analyze a video, commercial, or film scene that I will show to you in class. (I will give you at least two options to choose between.) In your paper, discuss the specific ways this example constructs gender. You should not do any outside research for this essay; rather, this exercise is designed to get you looking as closely as possible at a segment of media, and thinking creatively about how that segment constructs gender (femininity and masculinity).
You should watch the video several times, taking notes. You will want to do some descriptive work explaining what is going on in the segment: be sure to describe formal elements (shots, editing, framing, mise-en-scne) and not just plot. However, only mention those elements that are significant to your argument. The purpose of this paper is for you to make an argument, not just describe a scene. Be sure your essay has an introduction and a conclusion. State your thesis (make a claim), and use evidence from the segment to prove your thesis.
When you write your essay, consider some of the following questions. DO NOT write your essay as a series of answers to these questions. Instead, use them as guidelines to help you organize your thoughts into a coherent argument.
Who is looking at whom? How does the scene use looking relations to distribute narrative authority among the characters?
Which character is driving the narrative in this example? Whose fate do we most care about here?
How do aspects of the mise-en-scne (performance, costuming/hairstyle, lighting, set design) contribute to the representation of gender? What information do framing and editing convey?
What is the relationship of narrative to spectacle in this segment? Is there more plot here, or more spectacle? Who is functioning as the primary spectacle in the segment?
Who is the probable intended audience (or audiences) for the example you are analyzing? What factors contribute to your awareness of audience? Consider not only gender but also age, race/ethnicity, geographic location, nationality, etc.
The 3-4 page requirement means a MINIMUM of 3 pages (not 2 pages), and preferably more like 3 pages. You can write more than 4 pages if you like, but you dont need to.
Remember to italicize titles every time. Please use a 12-point font, double-spaced lines, 1 margins on all sides, and number your pages. Dont forget to proofread your paper (not just spell-check). And please give your paper a title.
