Instruction
Attend a concert of ANY type. This can be an additional concert of classical music, a rock concert, a rap concert, a concert in a bar or club, a jazz eventas long as its a live MUSICAL event. Contact me if you have any questions about your chosen event and its applicability for this assignment.
Write a report about the event following the guidelines below.
Discuss what band/artist/event you attended and the general vibe of the event. Was it what you expected? What kinds of people were in attendance? Be sure to do some research on the artist or band that you heard, and give some background of the performers based on your research. Include a citation of your source material. A good place to locate information on artists is through social media, such as facebook! Additionally, if you attend a small concert of local musicians, it's always fun to talk to them in person. Usually local musicians are accessible and happy to answer any questions you may have.
Write a detailed list of five songs that you heard, and describe each song in the same way that you would have on your listening journals (i.e. list which musical characteristics you heard, etc.). Focus on concrete musical characteristics, using the lists of categories from the first two listening journals. Do the songs change or evolve over time? If so, how? What was the audiences response to the music?
Pick one of the songs from the event and relate it to one of the pieces from class from weeks 1-4 (do a compare/contrast). I realize that for some types of music this may be a HUGE stretch, but try to find at least one kind of similarity, if only in the area of "both songs had a conjunct melody." You will likely find more differences than similarities, so go into detail in your comparison/contrast. How do you think the audience for the song you heard was different from or similar to the piece from your listening list?
Your report should be approximately 3-4 pages in length. Include citations of any research you may have done. As stated in the syllabus, you will receive zero credit for the assignment if there is strong evidence of plagiarism in your report.
***I don't need you to actually attend a concert I just need you to write about a concert you have attended in the past and make the paper sound good.
