_Step 1. Read the article Teotihuacan: Approaching the City (by Annabeth Headrick) and Teotihuacan: Location and Environmental Features (by Eduard Matos Montezuma), posted on TLEARN before completing this assignment. Be sure to take note of important environmental and cultural details about the site that you will need to answer the questions for Part I and Part III (listed 4 below) of the report. You should consult this article throughout the process of writing this assignment. _____Step 2. If you are using your own laptop to complete this portion of the assignment, go to http://www.google.com/earth/index.html to download Google Earth. (Google Earth is also available on all library and campus lab computers.) _____Step 3. Open up Microsoft Word to produce a textual document that you can cut and paste your notes into as you work on the technology portion of the assignment. You will eventually incorporate these notes into the text of your paper. _____Step 4. Open Google Earth and type Teotihuacan, Mexico into the Fly-to box under the "Fly-to" tab. You will see a marker for Teotihuacan de Arista, MEX, Mexico. Using the controls in the upper right hand corner of the image zoom in on the marker and you will see the archaeological site to the east (right) of the marker. You can also look at the image on the next page and those in the provided article on Teotihuacan to see what the site looks like. If you see images attached to this area on Google Earth these are usually tourist photos, and you can toggle them on and off in the "Layers" section, under "photos." _____Step 5. Set Google Earth to the metric system (meters/kilometers), under Tools > Options > 3D view tab. In the same dialogue box, set the Show Lat/Long to UTM measurements (Universal Transverse Mercator). If you are using a Mac: Click Google Earth > Preferences > 3D View and select Universal Transverse Mercator. _____Step 6. Alter the view of the elevation to 2, under Tools > Options > 3D view tab > Terrain box > Elevation Exaggeration. Click Apply and then ok. Next, click on View and select Sidebar. (Do the same for the Tool Bar if it is not currently visible). If you are using a Mac: Click Google Earth > Preferences > 3D View > Terrain box > Elevation Exaggeration. Click Apply and then ok. Next, click on View and select Sidebar. _____Step 7. Placemark the archaeological site, using the add placemark feature in the toolbar (it looks like a yellow thumbtack with a plus sign). Consult your article Teotihuacan: Approaching the City and see what kind of information you can find about the ruins. Then, give your placemark a name in the New Placemark dialog box and then add information in the section marked "Description" including the culture (the specific name and what general cultural group built the site), occupation time frame for the site, the kinds of archaeological features that are present at the site, what they are made from, as well as a brief discussion of the largest archaeological feature at the site. Include a geographic description of the area, including what the site would have looked like during prehistoric occupation versus today (vegetation, trash, construction materials, decoration), and the relationship between the archaeological site and the surrounding landscape. Why would they have located here, and how did the population modify the natural landscape? Write the description in your own words, being sure to include an in-text citation for the article, including the page number(s) from where you obtained the information as an in-text citation, using the following format: (Headrick 2007: page number or Montezuma 1990: page number). Remember to cut and paste this information from the dialogue box into a Word document as part of your written assignment. Then drag the box aside and move the thumbtack to where you want it on the map. To alter this description, right click on the placemark name in the left hand pane, and click "Properties". This will take you to the "Edit Placemark" dialog box. Click ok on the dialog box when you are done. 5 Map showing the major settlement of Teotihuacan. _____Step 8. Build a path around the boundary of the archaeological site, using the path feature in the toolbar (it looks like three small circles joined with lines). Reference the section Approaching the City (pages 1-10) inform the boundary that you create. You will need to zoom in and out to look for archaeological features such as the Street of the Dead (which runs approximately down the center of the site, from the north to the south), the northern (Pyramid of the Moon), southern (the Citadel/ Temple of Quetzalcoatl), eastern (the apartment complexes to the east of the Pyramid of the Sun) and western-most buildings (apartment complexes), and then determine where the settlement ends to identify the boundary of the site. You might put placemarkers on these locations to help you 6 as you build your boundary. Be sure to include a geographic description of the site within your discussion, and cite any information that you used from the reading to help you inform your decision making. When you are ready to draw your path, be sure that you zoom out far enough that you can see the full extent of the site before you begin drawing. When you click on the path feature, a dialog box will pop up, and you should provide a name for your path (such as Teotihuacan boundary, as well as a description of how you determined the boundary of the site (remember to cut and paste this information into a Word document as part of your assignment). Move the path box markers to where you want them on the image. Use the Style, Color tab in the path edit window to change the color and width of the line to make it more visible. The line should measure at least 3.0 in width and be a color that is clear and distinct from the aerial image. Click ok when you are done with the dialog box. _____Step 9. Measure distances, in kilometers, using the small ruler icon in the toolbar between what you determine is the center of the site to the closest water source (the three main rivers are the San Juan River, Huixulco, River, San Lorenzo River review the maps on p. 44, 46 and 47 of the Environment article to help you locate the river that would have been most accessible). When the dialog box pops up, set the distance to kilometers. Note that you will need to zoom out to be able to find the water source. Note the distance of your path and click save. A new path dialogue box will open up and you will need to provide a name for your path as well as a description of how you determined your path (such as path from center of Teotihuacan to the closest water source, the _____ River) as well as a description of how you determined your path. Next, determine what the heading is. (You can see the heading under view - Once you have a path created and visible in your "Places" list, right-click on the path name in the Places list and choose "Properties." This will open up a box, which will let you edit the path's description, etc. Inside that box, click on the "View" tab, and note that the fields (including the one for heading) are all blank. To create a heading, first use the map navigation tools to orient the map view so that your path is perfectly vertical in the map window, and so that the north arrow is now pointing either right or left a certain amount rather than straight up. In the "View" window, click on the "Snapshot Current View" button, and the fields for latitude, longitude, heading, tilt, etc., will populate. The heading measurement will appear in degrees, and will indicate how far from north (0 degrees) the axis of your path is tilted. For a path that runs east-west, the heading would be 90 degrees. A path running northeast-southwest would have a heading of 45 degrees). Be sure to note this information in your Microsoft Word document. You should consider including additional labeled placemarks that clearly label the various features that you have included on your image _____Step 10. Show the elevation profile for a drawn path. After drawing the path to the closest water source, go to the Edit link on the tool bar at the top of the page and select Show Elevation Profile. A window will appear under the map showing a graph of the elevation along all of points of your path. What is the minimum, maximum and average elevation in meters? Be sure to cut and paste these answers into your Microsoft Word document. To close the graph, hit the x in the right corner of it. You can also create an image of this graph with the photo showing your path by clicking on Edit on the tool bar above, and selecting Copy Image and cutting and pasting this right into your Microsoft Word document. _____Step 11. Use the tilt control to view the landscape at oblique angles. To do this, press and hold the Ctrl key while dragging the mouse forward or backward. Alternately, you can use the up or down arrows while pressing the Ctrl key. You can then scroll to change the Eye Altitude (lower right corner of the display) to better examine terrain and water features. This may come in handy in helping to address the issues below. Hold the Ctrl key and press the down arrow to return to the birds eye view. 7 _____Step 12. Explore the other tools that we have not yet examined on the toolbar and think about which of these might be useful for an archaeologist in learning about an ancient site and why. Discuss this below. _____Step 13. Save a .jpeg images that you will use to answer questions in Part II of the assignment, under File > Save > Save Image: [site name].jpg and save to your Y: drive (look under Computer for students (\\trinity\root) (Y:) or to a personal storage device. Cut and paste this image into your Microsoft Word document as well. _____Step 14. Now that you have collected your data, you will now incorporate it and the images you created into a written report, using the following format. The paper should be written in a narrative of approximately 2000-2500 words, double-spaced, using 12-point font (Times New Roman or Arial), and 1-inch margins. At the top left of the first page, include your name, section (Section 1 or Section 2), as well as the statement, On my honor, I have neither given nor received any unauthorized assistance on this assignment followed by your signed pledge. [Note that this should be completed as a solo assignment and copying any answers or using another students ideas is considered a violation of the honor policy and will be dealt with accordingly. Using information from another source and citing it as if it came from the article is also considered an honor code violation. Your signed pledge is an indication that you have complied with this guideline]. The text should follow below your pledge and should be concise, but thorough answer each of the questions in paragraph form. You are required to label each part of the assignment using subject headings (as listed below, Part I: Site Description, A, B, etc.:), and make it very clear which questions you are answering. At the end of the text, you are required to include four figures (although more are encouraged) with captions, followed by a bibliography (see details below). Part I: Site Description Using the information that you have learned from reading the articles Teotihuacan: Approaching the City and Location and Environmental Features, write a narrative that addresses the following questions. You should write this in your own words, but be sure to cite the articles as an in-text citation at the end of each new piece of information that you are using (i.e., Headrick 2007: 37), including the specific page number(s) on which the information was found. If the information you are citing all came from a contiguous set of pages, you can simply provide a single in-text citation at the end of the section (i.e., Headrick. 2007: 9-10 or Montezuma 1990: 44-46). If you are unclear about how to properly cite, please see the instructor for clarification. A) Whatisthenameofthesite, andincountryisitlocated?Whatistheculture(thespecific name and what general cultural group built the site), occupation time frame for the site (including the specific phases), the kinds of archaeological features present at the site, what they are made from, as well as a brief discussion of the largest archaeological feature at Teotihuacan? What was the general layout of the city, and why would the apartment complexes be so important in terms of making this crowded city livable? Include a geographic description of the region, such as what the site would have looked like during prehistoric occupation versus today (vegetation, construction materials, decoration of the apartment complexes), what kinds of natural resources they had for making tools, what kinds of animals did they eat (and how do we know this?), and what is the mythical relationship between the archaeological site and the surrounding landscape, including the water sources and the mountains/volcanoes? Why would the ancient population have located here, and how did they modify the natural landscape to allow them to better survive here? 8 B) Whatdidyounameyourplacemark, boundarypath, andwhatistheexacttextthatyou provided to describe how you created this boundary? Be sure that this text incorporates information about the geographic setting, as well as any information you used from the readings to inform your decision making. See Figures section below about the inclusion of relevant images. C) What did you name the path from the center of the site to the closest water source? What is the length in kilometers between these two points? What is the heading? What is the exact textual description you provided on how you determined your path? See Figures section below about the inclusion of relevant images. Part II: Applications to Archaeology A) Keepinginmindthatotherarchaeologistswillbelookingatyourdocument, inafewshort sentences, discuss why it is important to include thorough descriptions in the dialog boxes related to your Google Earth images? (Hint: think about the scientific method). B) AfterlookingattheotheravailabletoolsinGoogleEarththatwedidnotdiscuss(weused add placemark, add path, show ruler, tilt view, elevation profile), choose a tool that you think would be useful for an archaeologist in trying to understand an archaeological site. Describe the tool (what is it called in Google Earth) including what it does. In a few sentences, explain why this tool in particular would be useful for understanding the site of Teotihuacan. Be as specific as possible in your discussion about how you, as an archaeologist would use this. Part III: Challenges to Ancient Populations A) Usingtheinformationfromthereadings(inparticular, thinkaboutchallengesthisancient population at Teotihuacan would have faced other than water issues). What are some of the key variables in the natural environment of this sites area that would likely have had a significant impact on human populations? What were the advantages of this landscape that may have impacted the settling of this population here? Looking at the site through the tools available in Google Earth (tilt view, the elevation profile, etc.), in a few sentences address how would topography (major canyons, mountains, volcanoes, etc.) have affected this population? Give specific examples to support your points. See section below on Figures about relevant images. B) Second, specificallywhatkindsofchallengesdidancientpeoplesfaceinaccessingavailable water resources (major rivers, springs, lakes, etc.)? How might they have brought water to the site? Give specific examples to support your point. See section below on Figures about relevant images. Be sure to properly cite the readings for any information that you use in answering any of the sections above. _____Step 15. Figures. You should reference relevant figures for the sections of the text in which you used Google Earth to help you better understand the site. You should include a figure showing your site boundary, the path to the nearest waterway, an elevation profile, and a fourth image of your choice that provides visual evidence for variables such as topography, environmental conditions, etc. Use placemarks, placemark titles, and paths to indicate particular features on your images that you are discussing within the text. Place these figures at the end of the text (but before the bibliography) and label each image as Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3, Fig. 4, and include a descriptive figure caption for each. Be sure to actually reference each figure within the text of your paper (i.e., Figure 1) so that a reader can easily associate your written text with the appropriate image. You are required to include at least four images, however, you are strongly encouraged to include other additional images that would be relevant to your textual descriptions. 9 _____Step 16. Bibliography. Include a bibliography with the following citation at the very end of the text of your paper: Headrick, Annabeth. 2007. Approaching the City. In The Teotihuacan Trinity: The Sociopolitical Structure of an Ancient Mesoamerican City, pp. 1-22. University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX. Montezuma, Eduardo Matos. 1990. Location and Environmental Features. In Teotihuacan: The City of the Gods, pp. 43-89. Rizzoli: New York City. Note, using information from sources such as internet sites and passing it off as coming from the peer-reviewed book chapters provided is considered a violation of academic integrity and will result in the student be turned in to the Academic Honor Council. _____Step 17. Proofread your paper. Check for writing clarity, typos, proper citations, run on paragraphs, and formatting issues. Be sure that you have thoroughly addressed the assignment requirements, and that your figures are clearly labeled and include a caption.

    Frank_Pro | Sep 20, 2016, 18:41 PM
  • it should be simple, right?
    User_5566 | Sep 20, 2016, 18:43 PM
  • it it due tomorrow, what time can you be able to send it to me
    User_5566 | Sep 20, 2016, 18:47 PM
  • Yes I can do it, but I realized the length of the report is 2000-2500 words or about 8 pages. $15 too low for that
    Frank_Pro | Sep 20, 2016, 18:51 PM
  • I can do it within 24 hours.
    Frank_Pro | Sep 20, 2016, 18:52 PM
  • you can do it shorter than 8 pages don't worry about that, just confirme me if you are able to complete it by tomorrow?
    User_5566 | Sep 20, 2016, 18:53 PM
  • confirm, yes in order for me to assign you the work
    User_5566 | Sep 20, 2016, 18:54 PM
  • can you offer $50? The report is quite long and i guarantee quality work
    Frank_Pro | Sep 20, 2016, 18:54 PM
  • There is no way, it is not a major assignment its just a HW
    User_5566 | Sep 20, 2016, 18:56 PM
  • Okay, I will deliver by tomorrow. Although I would like you to specify the number of pages you would like just to be sure and avoid revising the work afterwards.
    Frank_Pro | Sep 20, 2016, 18:59 PM
  • I have read the instructions again and I am worried that $15 covers about 3 pages and the work required covers far much more than that. Maybe I can allow you assign another writer with all due respect.
    Frank_Pro | Sep 20, 2016, 19:02 PM
  • 4 pages of text plus the screen shots of google earth, I think they ask 3 or 4
