Prompt: Most of the authors represented in this chapter believe that our society is undergoing significant changes. Many of them warn that these changes are putting our societies or political systems at risk. But some also suggest that we ahve new opportunities to realize our democratic ideas, pershaps more fully than we have in the past. Almost all of the readings contain at least an implicit call to action. What do you think about the kinds of changes these authors describe? Which of the threats and/pr opportunities that they describe seem most significant to you? How should we respond to them? Whatever position you take, consider the role of local communitites and/or relatively small groups of like-minded individuals in responding to these threats/opportunities.
