While discussions and awareness about transgender issues have increased dramatically in recent years, some of the basic concerns about the gender binary were exposed over four decades ago by Lois Gould in X: A Fabulous Childs Story. Originally published in 1972 in Ms. Magazine, Goulds (fictional) story shows what happens to one young child who is reared without the tradi- tional sex role stereotypes; but imagine if everyone was raised that way. . . Originally published as a short story, it was eventually expanded into a longer book. The original story though has been recycled and posted by many others over the years. Do an internet search for X: A Fabulous Childs Story by Lois Gould or ask your instructor to provide a copy. After reading it, answer the following questions: 1. Why do you think the relatives, neighbors got mad when the Joneses said Its an X? How would your family and neighbors react if you wanted to raise a gender-neutral child? 2. The story describes many ways that our society is divided by sex. Were you surprised by all the different ways we divide by male and female? Explain why or why not. 3. What were some of the challenges that Xs parents faced in the story? How do you think you would have handled these challenges? 4. From both the story and your personal opinion, identify some positives and negatives of raising a gender-neutral child? Of which do you think there are more?
