Write a film treatment
General Guidelines
This non-researched assignment is a bit unusual. I am asking you to imagine making a film based on this text. You will have to make choices about characters, setting, plot, and the like; you might choose to eliminate some scenes from your imagined film, or you might invent some to accommodate a shift to a contemporary setting, for example. Your treatment will adhere to the following format:
1. A Working Title
2. Logline
A one-sentence description of the film.
Who is main character and what does he or she want? What is standing in way of main character? What makes story unique? Use action words.
3. Identify and describe key characters
List characters (character names in ALL CAPS). Describe each character, focusing on that characters relationship to the goals of the film.
4. Summary: Provide the who, what, where, when, and why of the film.
5. Scene-by scene description:
a. Act I: Set the scene and dramatize the main conflicts in the story
b. Act II: Demonstrate how the conflicts in Act I lead to a crisis
c. Act III: Lay out the final conflict and resolution
Why do I give this assignment?
It isnt unusual for students to say, Hey, this book would make a good movie. Ive decided to make that response a writing assignment. I think this format gives us a good way to think about basic elements of the story like plot, character, and theme, and might be a useful tool for reading. This is a new assignment for me, so Its a bit experimental. Im curious about how it turns out.
A few words of advice:
There is a lot of room for creativity in this assignment. I will be looking to see if you have a thorough understanding of the characters, plot, and themes. Your letter should talk about some of the creative choices youve made, and why you think this particular text would make a good film. Remember the length expectations for non-researched papers, and follow the format closely.
