hi, I need respond to this discussion; The biggest problem with the mother-daughter relationship is that the mother wanted her daughter to be a prodigy. I feel like one problem was that Auntie Lindo's daughter was very good and chess and won a lot of competitions. Another problem that was mentioned was when the daughter said she wished she was dead like the others implying that her mother had other children at some point but they had never made it. That could be the biggest problem, since she had no one else to raise to be a prodigy. Her daughter wanted to be herself not what she was told to be. The significance of two kinds was that her mother believe there were two kinds of daughters, obedient ones and ones who follow their own mind, quite frankly the daughter was the opposite of what was wanted and followed her own mind. At the end the mother offered the piano and I feel as if that symbolized that dispite the disappointments her daughter had given her she really cared and believed her daughter could have been something. When her daughter sat down and played "Child Contended" she had realized that it was the second part of the song "Pleading Child". I need it in 10 hr

(I really enjoyed your explanation about the two pieces of music that the author played. I did not think much about the mentioning of 'two different kind of Chinese women' and how that demonstrated irony with the music. However, I do recall this being mentioned in the story. The main character realized that she was not going to be the woman that her mom wanted to be, strictly obedient. Also, I like how you pointed out that the girl and her mother were the "two kinds" of women that the title captures. In my essay I focused more on the life of the child. I interpreted it as the main character being two kinds of women throughout her life. Your explaination pointed out a different conclusion that could be drawn from the title. This leads me to wonder what the author really meant when she titled the story, "Two Kinds." Do you think she could have meant it to mean both?)
