IMPORTANT: ANSWER a total of THREE essay questions, the MANDATORY question and TWO more of your choice each from TWO different groups. TWO different groups must be represented.

Each essay response should be between 750-1,250 words, double-spaced, 11 point Cambria font, one-inch margins, NO cover sheet, with a works cited list (see below) for each question

Do not copy/cut and paste from the text(s) you use.

Put the material into your own words.

Demonstrate you have read the chapters AND know the lecture materials.

Use an in-text parenthetical citation form: (ICP 243), where ICP refers to our text name and 243 the page number, or (authors last name page number) for your outside sources), or (Lecture Coups, Revolutions Slide 4: phases of Iranian revolution). You must cite your sources!

Each essay should have an intro, body and conclusion that fulfills ALL TASKS of the question.

Use at minimum ONE or more case/state from our ICP text (other than the United States EXCEPT for the Mandatory Question) and ONE or more cases/states from OUTSIDE our ICP cases
IDENTIFY at minimum 2-3 concepts for each question.

UNDERLINE and BOLD each and define the concept within the context of your essay. For example, Duvergers Law, which states that SMD or FPTP systems over time lead to a two-party system, may explain why the Nigerian electoral system (ICP 234) .

MANDATORY QUESTION:
Differentiate among presidential, semi-presidential and/or parliamentary systems. Compare and contrast the relations between the executive and legislative branches in 2 of the ICP countries (you may use U.S. for this question only). Either compare a presidential vs. semipresidential system OR a presidential and parliamentary system. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each system in the ICP countries you chose?


CHOOSE TWO additional questions from two separate groups below)

GROUP A)
Compare and contrast the main features of FPTP and PR, highlighting some of the key advantages and disadvantages of each system. Is one of them more "democratic?" Is one of them more "manageable?" Illustrate your answer with at least one country/example for each system. Use one example from our text and one NOT from our text.

Compare neocorporatist and interest group pluralist systems. What are the benefits and drawbacks of each? Use specific cases in your answers. Use one case from our text and one NOT from our text. Compare and contrast each.

GROUP B)
Some authoritarian regimes hold regular elections. Some of these elections are more "free" than others. In some cases, scholars even prefer to classify such regimes as "electoral" democracies. Explain this concept. Refer to two casesone from the text and the other NOT from the text to illustrate this phenomenon.

What is the "problem of succession?" Explain how it affects personalist, military, one-party, and theocratic regimes. Provide an example of a succession problem from a case from the ICP text and one case NOT from our text confronting an authoritarian regime from the past 10 years.

Why do the military intervene in politics? Make sure you include the causes of military intervention outlined in lecture AND the ICP text. Then provide 2 key examples of military coups that illustrate two of the reasons.

Describe two cases of democratization of your choice (one from our text and EITHER the Chile OR Poland case we viewed in class). Remember to describe in detail the transition, consolidation, quality of the new regime, and freedom status of each state.
