Third Assignment: Contact and Conflict in the Age of Faith
I have included below five different sources from the Crusading era (roughly 1100-1200); these accounts are the actual, eyewitness recollections of people alive at the time who could chronicle the events as they unfolded. Using documents below, please address the following questions:
1) What reasons were given for the massacre of Jews in the Rhineland? How do the chroniclers (Albert of Aix and Ekkehard of Aura) attempt to explain the bloodshed?
2) Jerusalem was conquered twice during the period: once by the Christians in 1099, and again by the Muslims in 1187. What are the main differences between the two conquests? Do you believe the two chroniclers are being objective and fair, or do you see evidence of bias? Why?
3) How did the Christian and Muslim communities interact during the years of the Crusader states? How are the Christian and Muslim perspectives similar or different?
4) What, to you, is the major lesson to be learned from the Crusades? If you were a ruler at the time, which side would you support, and why?
