Students must visit all installations
Assignment: Selecting from one of the above installations, students will visit the installation, take photographs (if permitted) and sketch the atmospheric qualities of the piece
incorporating the surrounding context. Sketches are expected to be more abstract in nature. (Include sketches and photographs with final turn in) and write an essay that provides a comprehensive analysis of the light quality in and surrounding the installation, artistic intention through light and your experiential analysis of the piece.
Notes: Start out with a general perceptual description of the piece. Use the lighting language you're reading about. Take special note to include knowledge from chapters 3,5,6,7.
Now pick it apart... How does it work? What is the artists intent with the piece? How was it achieved?
How does the piece respond to the architecture around it, what is the context? Explain the significance of the context, talk about color, texture and material choices.
How does the lamp source play a role in how the piece is perceived? What role does the luminaire play in the performance of the light?
