Instruction
Portfolio
This part of the course is designed to let you follow, as much as possible, your own interests in microbiology. Collectively these components count as much as an exam so you need to put some effort into completing them; you will receive an independent grade for each assignment, but you will turn it in as a single portfolio (you are welcome to turn it in early).
Use the following as a template. Elements that require a Minimum # must be fulfilled for full credit. If you complete more than the Maximum number of a given type I will not grade those assignments. Assignments are due as noted in the syllabus by 2:00 sharp Friday. Late papers will be assessed a 20% reduction daily.
>> 1) 5 1-3 page assignments. For this section you can use diverse sources to explore aspects of microbiology that are of interest to you. Make sure you note what category it is (A, B, C etc. and what number writing assignment it is (Assignment #1, #2, etc.).
A) Microbiology Documentary series- Maximum of 1.Examples Unseen Strangers series, Biowarefare, Microbiological History on Nova. Movies that are of a historical nature (And the Band Played On) may also be used.

2) Primary Research Paper- A review of a primary research paper in which you should discuss the data, experiments and findings. Length= ~ 5 double spaced written pages. Additional reference materials for the paper are encouraged. An excellent place to start to look is at http://journals.asm.org/search.dtl and http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed
3) Self-Analysis. A self-analysis of aspects of microbiology that will directly impact your career that you will complete AFTER you have finished the first part of this assignment.
Assignments are due every second Thursday of the term. Assignments turned in late will receive an automatic deduction of one letter grade/day. Assignments turned in after 5 days will not be graded. You are welcome to turn assignments in early! I would suggest trying to find a primary paper for part two by the middle
